School History

Montessori TeachersThe Montessori School of Miami Beach was founded in 1969 by Bethany Vickers and started in a single classroom with sixteen students. Under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Caspari and operating as the only Montessori school in Miami Beach, the Montessori School of Miami Beach quickly expanded and moved in 1973. This same year the elementary program was started with thirteen graduating preschool students. Dr. Caspari initiated the music Program with Mrs. Vickers and very soon the program expanded to forty children.

In 1983, the school was turned over to Bethany’s twin daughters, Linda Vickers Miller and Laura Vickers Burnett. Together, they operated the Montessori School of Miami Beach, serving children in a Preschool Program and Lower and Upper Elementary Programs. In 1995, a new sister school was founded, the Gulfstream Montessori School in Hallandale, Florida. This school began with a Preschool Program for children ages 2-½ through six. In 2001 the school expanded to include a Toddler Program for students beginning at eighteen months old. In December 2002, it was announced that beginning with the 2003-2004 school year, the two schools would merge to become one school at the Hallandale location. The school will serve students in a Toddler Program starting at eighteen months and will also offer a Preschool Program for students 2-½ through 6, and a Lower and Upper Elementary Program for students first through the sixth grade.
